After we bought our house 3 years ago we didn't have neighbors for a long time. The house on one side of us is owned by a woman who lives elsewhere and she has her son maintain the property. The other side was abandoned shortly after we moved it. It was great! Our first house was in a mild demiliterized zone. We heard the gunshots so close that we could also make out what the victims were screaming as they went by. Every Fourth of July and New Years Day found my dh standing in front of my dd's window to protect her from those "Celebrating" who might hit her as she slept. We finally came to spend those dates with relatives until we could move out. The neighbors around the corner sold drugs out of their house and several of the neighbors on our street allowed their toddlers and preschoolers to walk around the neighborhood unacompanied. I brought one of them home after she had been at the community pool alone and had encounted a man smoking pot there.
